Imagine you eventually got the job you've been praying, planning and preparing for, and on a Monday morning you walk into this new office space, and then your entire being is overwhelmed with the FEELING of being 'unfit' for the role- bad hire.
Or rather you shared an insightful information at your team's knowledge sharing session, and the news got to the Head of your division.
Instead of responding to his long and affirming 'well done' Email, you ignored the email and told yourself 'What's the noise exactly about?'
Your manager decided to share with your team the sterling presentation you pulled off at the last Exco meeting and in the middle of that celebratory speech, you sarcastically water down his accolades and tell everyone in the room, 'I'm not that good o. What's the big deal?'.
From the depth of your heart, you know that statement didn't come from a place of humility, but a sheer feeling called 'Impostor Syndrome'.
Imposter syndrome can be defined as a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evident success It instils self-doubt and low self-esteem (HBR).
This simply means that feeling of intellectual fraudulence in the middle of sound result. You've just aced a brilliant presentation at work and the next voice in your head is; 'I hope you know you are just a one-time wonder. You aren't that good'
This is why you find people out rightly reject celebrations at work, confidently downplay their own sheer achievements and in the name of 'humility' allow others to take the 'shine and glory'. I may not have spent so much time as a Manager but I know this feeling obstructs career growth and it makes people demand less for what they are worth. This is why you find people stay in a toxic work environment and they aren't able to leave because they feel 'they aren't that good'
There are several ways to fight this 'feeling' and I should be able to touch on a couple of them next week Monday. However, you must realize this is just a 'feeling' and it is something that can be worked on and should be dealt with as quick as possible.
Have you ever had this 'Impostor Syndrome' thing. Share with me, let's learn.
